If you like to bawl during movies, then this unabashedly sentimental flick is one you are sure to love. The year is 1910, the city is San Francisco, and things are tough for the Hanson family, newly arrived from Norway. In a way, nothing much really happens in this film – the events are all quite ordinary – but any immigrant will be able to empathize with Papa’s trouble in finding work, and with Mama’s thrifty budgeting and the way she keeps pushing her children towards a better life. This is really an ode to all immigrant mothers, a touching tribute to their love and self-sacrifice.
